Boutique hotels are replacing plastic bath trays with handwoven rattan and bamboo pieces. The change reads as a design decision, but it is a procurement decision first.

Choose the material before the shape

Rattan core holds a tighter weave and suits amenity trays, tissue boxes and small caddies that guests handle daily. Bamboo strip is stiffer and better for larger laundry hampers and waste bins where the frame carries weight. Seagrass is the softest of the three and belongs in dry zones only.

Specify the finish for wet rooms

Ask the factory for a water-based matte sealer on every piece that sits within one metre of a shower. An unsealed weave will darken unevenly after three months of steam. A sealed weave keeps its tone for two to three years in the same position.

Plan lead times honestly

Stock shapes ship in three to five working days. Custom sizes, hotel logo branding and bespoke finishes run twenty-five to forty-five days, because every piece is woven by hand. Sampling adds a further ten days. Build these windows into the FF&E schedule rather than compressing them at the end.

Order in the right quantities

Minimum order quantity is thirty pieces per item. For a forty-room property, order fifteen percent above room count so housekeeping has rotation stock while damaged pieces are replaced.

Maintenance your housekeeping team can follow

Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Never soak. Air-dry away from direct sun. A weave that is allowed to dry fully between uses will outlast a moulded plastic equivalent several times over.

Why handmade holds up commercially

Hand weaving allows local repair. A loosened strand can be re-tucked on site, where a cracked plastic tray is simply discarded. Over a five-year replacement cycle, the woven option usually costs less and supports a zero-plastic guest experience that reads clearly in photography and reviews.
