China's Rattan Export Boom: Growth, Drivers and the Road Ahead

For most of the last century, a rattan basket from China was a humble, low-cost commodity. Today it is something else entirely: a design object that sits in boutique hotels in Copenhagen, concept stores in Los Angeles and family homes in Sydney. China's woven craft exports are going through a quiet renaissance.

Why global demand keeps rising

Three forces are pushing buyers towards natural woven goods. First, the move away from single-use plastic has reached the home: shoppers now look for storage, lighting and tableware made from renewable fibres. Second, hospitality and retail interiors favour warm, tactile materials that photograph well and age gracefully. Third, the Japandi aesthetic — the meeting of Japanese restraint and Scandinavian warmth — has made rattan, bamboo and seagrass core materials rather than holiday décor.

China's unique strengths

China combines what few other sourcing countries can offer at once: large regional clusters of skilled weavers, mature processing of rattan, bamboo and willow, reliable export logistics, and factories able to move from a 30-piece trial order to container volumes. Hand weaving cannot be fully automated, so the depth of experienced labour is a real and lasting advantage.

From contract making to design-led export

The biggest change is a shift in what gets exported. Instead of copying catalogue shapes, more Chinese workshops now develop their own designs, finishes and packaging, and sell directly to designers, retailers and hotel groups through independent websites. Buyers gain transparency on material, origin and lead time; makers capture more of the value they create.

What comes next

We expect continued growth in three areas: nested and flat-pack designs that cut freight costs and emissions; certified, traceable materials that satisfy European and North American sustainability rules; and small-batch custom work for hospitality projects. For buyers, the opportunity is to source directly, at lower minimums, from makers who understand both tradition and modern design.
